IIAP 2020/21 Practical Training at NorthSite

IACA Group Exhibition at NorthSite Contemporary Arts 18 SEPTEMBER - 7 NOVEMBER 2020

IACA is committed to delivering training to extend artsworkers professionally. Launched in September 2020 the inaugural ‘IACA Indigenous Artsworker Program’ (IIAP) is a 1-year pilot program developed to upskill artsworkers through specifically targeted and customised arts industry training.

IACA is delighted to have recently partnered with NorthSite Contemporary Arts (in Cairns 15-17 September), delivering practical onsite training in exhibition design and installation. During training with NorthSite staff, IIAP participants; Nephi Denham (Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre), Florence Gutchen (Erub Arts), Bereline Loogatha (Mornington Island Art) & Junibel Doughboy (Bana Yirriji Art Centre) workshopped, formulated and installed a group exhibition, drawing inspiration from artworks promoted by participating IACA Member Art Centres in the 2020 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

Conveying their own pre-existing cultural and intimate knowledge about the artists and stories behind the artworks, the exhibition explores and reveals personal connections and insights, presenting an innovative and unique curatorial perspective.

The exhibition features artworks in a variety of mediums, from 9 Art Centres; Yalanji Arts, Erub Arts, Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, Wei’Num Arts & Crafts, Wik and Kugu Art Centre, Hopevale Arts & Culture Centre, Mornington Island Art, Bana Yiriji Art Centre & Pormpuraaw Art & Culture Centre.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
